Declutter 2012

Some time ago, I realized that since more papers and items enter my house than leave each day, I am slowly being buried to death. So, with a little help from my long distance sis, we've been trying to get rid of at least one thing a week. I've discovered this to be a low goal and figure that the quicker I reach 52, the more extra credit I get. With 7 people in a house, surely a lot more than one thing is added per week. We've been taking pictures to share and motivate each other, and today, I feel I'm needing a sense of some progress, so I'm going to blog about it.

Unfortunately, most of these kitchen pictures are after shots, since I was half way through before we thought about taking pictures. My mother used to say that we stop cleaning where other people start. Well, at least I started.

Oh, and I have 4 stamp collectors that have been plaguing my kitchen, but I put that little stamp drying string up and then I don't have them drying on towels on the counter. It seems every time I turn around, that PB&J is back there on the counter.

It's been a lot easier to keep the dishes clean and I'm finding my drainer isn't always so full and difficult for the kids to put away when we keep up on the dishes. I hate the look of a drainer, but I hate to waste my time drying when the air can do that for me.

I know my windowsill is crowded, but it's winter and this is the place with the best chance of survival for these guys.

We made some banana smoothies, used the Martinelli's on some guests for dinner and put the crockpot and Christmas soap away.

Swapped that ineffective playdoh caddy for 2 empty ice cream buckets- much more practical for cleaning up. Weston had a bit of time and since I had cleaned, it was easy to finally get that CD player installed and that made it easier to clean the space. I still need to go through all the music, etc. but at least this spot is manageable.

Dread, the shelf and ledge. I know there's still a lot of stuff on this shelf, but at least I know where it is. When I got it cleared off, I had to fight the urge to haul it out to the garage, sand and repaint it. But, I knew if I did, my cleaner kitchen would be a reck when the kids arrived, so I decided to save it for another day. I know the diaper box is unsightly, but it's perfect for the scratch paper. I'll either find a cute container or cover the box, but until then, it's doing a good job. I threw away a lot of stuff, so it's a good starting point. Adam likes to do several puzzles after breakfast each day, so it was good to have a place for them.

In order to clean off my bedroom dresser, there were a few projects to attend to. I already had the clock hanging, but it needed to be fixed and my plates and tiles from Jerusalem and my sisters were unhung for several reasons. I fixed the clock just with some needle nose pliers (if I'd only known it was so easy...) and hung two of the small plates with plate hangers.

I moved this painting to fit two more plates next to it. I've learned that some hangers do a better job at keeping the plate flush against the wall.

My sister brought me that little rose trivet from the National Gallery in London and I wanted to make a wooden frame for it like my Granddaddy used to, but it broke. I nice vertical split. I glued it, but then was afraid to use a plate hanger because of the pressure of the springs. I went to the framing department at Hobby Lobby and the lady suggested these adhesive plate hangers.

I didn't use them on the plates, since they're a bit more costly and I already had the plate hangers, but they worked really well on the trivet and these 2 Jerusalem tiles, one which had also split down the middle and been glued.

The adhesive should also provide an extra gluing for the broken ones and they are able to hang pretty close to flush against the wall.

Well, there's my little bit of a pat on the back for the day. I'm just going to keep going little by little. I made a to do list room by room (yes, I've done this before). But, this time I went through and coded it into four areas: cleaning and organizing, home improvement projects, creative projects, and things to buy. I tend to get distracted by the excitement of home improvement and creative projects when I need to tend to the cleaning and organizing first. In a few hours, I get to help 2 kids finish science fair projects for next week.

The Lindsay ABC’s of 2011

A. Adam (2) is still the center of attention in our family. B. In June, Sam (8) was Baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. C. cubscouts. Nathan (10) entered the Webelos and Sam became a Wolf. Elaine got to go to camp with them, too. D. Dirty Dash. In August, Dad ran a muddy obstacle course race in Soldier Hollow with some friends. He had so much fun, that Elaine probably won’t get him in a regular road race again. E. This month, Weston got called as the Elder’s Quorum President. F. Fellowship. Weston finished his Final academic achievement from his long term goal list and became a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists. G. Lena (11) enjoyed doing Gymnastics in the summer. H. We did lots of family Hiking, including the loop from Silver Lake, to Twin Lakes, through Solitude and back to Silver Lake. The kids do a great job. Weston and Lena waited for the snow to melt off Timpanogos, but it didn’t happen before school started, so they hiked Mt. Olympus instead and found it shorter, but challengingly steep. I. Lena and Nathan continue to enjoy playing band Instruments and they and Sam and Jacob continue to play the piano. It gets hard to fit everyone’s practice into each day. J. Jacob (7) is our Jokester, and enjoys reading. K. Elaine will miss working with the Kids in Primary since she was recently released as Primary President and called as a ward missionary. L. In October, we enjoyed a trip to California, including Legoland and the Mormon Battalion visitor’s center. M. The Ogden Marathon. If Elaine and Weston were to ever do a Marathon again, this was beautiful enough to repeat. N. Lena was in the Nutcracker this year with Mountain West Ballet and enjoyed being a Toy Doll and a Snow Sprite. O. Lena started out the year by going to the Orthodontist and it looks like Nathan will start next year and we’ll have someone in braces for many years. Sam was in a play called Oleander Manor and did a great job as a dancing skeleton. P. Adam loves his little Playschool group of 4 boys. Q. Adam is constantly asking Questions. “What?” “Why not?” R. Riding our bikes on several family jaunts was a big hit this year. Adam’s new seat on Mom’s bike made it fun to Ride together in the morning along the path next to the train. S. Sam enjoys Soccer with his friends and Siblings. T. Theatre. Lena, Nathan and Sam enjoyed Spring Theatre in an alien play. Three Trips to California in Twelve months were made by our family from last Christmas, to a great Miller Reunion, to our October Trip. U. V. Weston has worked in Utah Valley for almost 4 years and is enjoying his responsibilities in Orem. W. Lena and Nathan got to take turns on the swim team. All the kids have enjoyed swim lessons and love the Water. X. Mom and Lena both had X-rays this year. Lena’s for her braces, and Mom’s to diagnose pneumonia. We enjoy eXercising together in lots of different ways. Y. Yardwork seems to be a never-ending family activity, so we try to make it fun. We enjoyed Yelling at several RSL soccer games this year, including one where Elaine (Mom of the Match) and the kids got to be on the big screen. Z. We really feel very blessed and have Zero complaints about 2011!

Peace of Mind

Sunday evening, we were visiting with Grandma and Grandpa
when Adam gagged and we thought he'd put a crayon in his mouth.

Weston went over and Adam got this look on his face like he'd swallowed
and it had hurt. Weston looked in Adam's hand and there were
2 magnetic sticks and a ball. That night he threw up a little bit and
the next morning, too. Then he started to have the runs. So, we were a
bit confused, but thought he happened to have what his cousin had last week
(or just a germ he'd gotten from sucking on his finger). I made an appointment
this morning for this afternoon since it had not passed yet. Of course, the
concern was that there could be 2 magnetic objects, not just one. I asked Adam
twice yesterday, showing him examples, "was it a ball or a stick?" He said "Eat it,"
pointing inside his mouth. Then he answered "stick" and pointed to the longer
magnetic both times he was asked. So, I was a bit more concerned. The ball is not
actually a magnet, just a metal ball that has become a little magnetized through it's use.
But the stick has 2 small magnets inside the ends and is longer and could maybe
get stuck somewhere. So, I guess it was time for some expensive peace of mind. By 8:30pm, it had already passed. Good thing he's such a cute kid!

Signs of Spring

It feels like Spring took a long time coming this year. In fact, it feels like Summer is nearly here and I somehow missed Spring.

I love the contrast. It's a good thing I took these pictures the other day,
because Adam practiced Tball on them a few days later.

The Monster Concert included 7 schools, including Caylee's,
so Lena got to be in the same concert as her cousin.

Nathan's Emigration Report - David Richards

Nathan's Emigration Report was due today. I was impressed by how neatly and carefully he colored and wrote. He had to handwrite his pedigree chart and report and do a poster. He really enjoyed learning about Wales and his great great great grandfather, David Richards.

On this line, he had to go back to the 6th generation to find the relative that emigrated. The baby in the picture is Elsie Richards, Nannie's mother. She and her husband Albert Kohler lived on the farm in Midway where we go play and camp each summer for the Kohler Reunion.

Thanks to Aunt Raeann, we found a picture of the boat they came on in 1860, The Underwriter, plus other information about the trip at http://www.lib.byu.edu/mormonmigration/person.php?id=91784&q=David%20Richards. Thanks to Nannie we already had his history and some great pictures of he and his family. We found that history as well as his journals, and Nannie's account of visiting Wales herself on http://welshmormonhistory.org/.

Nathan learned that Wales is one of 4 countries that make up the UK: Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The longest river in the UK, The Severn, is in Wales.

And he really loved drawing this dragon (the Welsh Flag). He did an impressive job on his artwork, just looking and sketching. I don't think he knew he could do that.

Christmas Card in March!

I was going to post an electronic Christmas Card in December, and here it is March! But, I've been sick for 6 days now, and my head feels better when I'm sitting up, so I'd might as well start blog catch up, right? (Since I haven't posted much since the last Christmas Card!)

The Lindsay Top 10 of 2010~ 10 years with Kids

1. Adam is the center of the family, and he seems to know it. He is so fun and keeps us all smiling. He loves books and isn’t afraid to expect a lap and a story from any visitor or family member.

2. Disneyland- This time was especially fun, since the kids were a little older to enjoy more rides. They wanted to stay way later than we expected and loved every minute together.

3. Weston’s Graduation from Regis University with his Doctorate of Physical Therapy and Fellowship in Manual Therapy. The whole family made a trip of it to Denver, Colorado and had a good time.

4. Cousins : We are so lucky to have a lot of family nearby. We love playing games and celebrating birthdays together. We also made it to visit families in Denver and San Francisco whose homes we had not made it to, yet.

5. Hiking! As the kids get older, hiking together gets easier and easier. They do an awesome job and are real troopers. Lena and Weston hiked Timpanogos and made a great memory together.

6. Four Kids in Elementary School. Jacob entered Kindergarten this year and is loving it. Sam is in 2^nd grade and gets “schoolsick” when there’s a holiday. Nathan is in 4^th grade, started the clarinet in the band, which seems to be just his thing. Lena plays the flute and they enjoy practicing and going to band together. Lena is in 5^th grade, getting ready to start her 4^th science fair project and has won first place for 3 years straight- no pressure, right?

7. Soccer keeps us busy, from REAL games to the kids’ games, to Elaine coaching, & Weston reffing. In February, we went to St. George together for a tournament for Lena and enjoyed the “warmer” weather and did some hiking.

8. Primary & Sports are our church callings and they keep us busy. Elaine enjoys being involved with the kids at church- Primary’s a great place to be. She also enjoys doing some church sports together with Weston, like Ultimate Frisbee and Coed Volleyball.

9. The boys’ room. Our newest, biggest project we’ve undertaken has been a lot of learning as well as rewarding and the 3 boys enjoy their cool Space Room.

10. First Marathon Together. In September, Weston & Elaine did the Top of Utah Marathon. To continue with the training in 2011, they signed up for the Ogden Marathon next.

It's that time of year...

Ah, Christmas Cards. Each year, I think, “I’m just going to go digital and skip the post office.” But, then I remember all the friends and family that enjoy an actual picture and update in their hot little hands. And, of course, I love the pictures I receive and being able to put other people’s Christmas cards up as part of the holiday decorations. Plus, this year, rather than taking all the kids one by one to get their yearly picture taken, (and not own the copyright to them) we went up to their Great Grandparent’s one morning in the fresh 9 inches of snow, and took our fun pictures. What a great memory! They love playing there in the backyard, and these pictures are already a fun memory. My cousin Julie lives close by and did a great job being our photographer.

So, now I can do whatever I want with my photos. Yeah! My cousins’ wife shared on her blog about Shutterfly’s great cards and their deal for 50 free ones, so I decided to try it, plus it got me back on my blog! But, I’ll have to hurry if I’m going to get them out for Christmas. I’ve done a few things with Shutterfly in the past. I love photobooks. They make the perfect gift for Grandparents. Last year I did a book with pictures from all of my siblings’ families and it was so easy to pull off just getting photos from each family. I remember past projects for special occasions and how much harder it was to pull something like that off. Now, we can make something once, and order as many copies as we want. Love it. Shutterfly is easy to use and it will even put your pictures into an entire book and then you can just make the changes you want. I haven’t made the total digital scrapbooking switch, but have played with it. I think it is such a fun and efficient way to go. They take up less room, and making multiple copies is feasible. My cousin’s wife (different one- I have a lot of great cousins through marriage) does a digital scrapbook and “publishes” it by each year. It’s so fun to see the hardbound picture books their kids can flip through and remember their family adventures.

As I was deciding what to do for my Christmas card, I looked at a couple of different photo websites and Shutterfly had the best layouts for what I wanted. We have 5 kids and I wanted to include each of their individual pictures as well as our family shot. They had several ones to choose from that included 6 photos, other websites didn’t seem to think anyone needed that many pictures on a Christmas card! I’ve narrowed my Christmas card down to these layouts I liked the best: Family Wall Red, With Love Chartreuse, Pictures in Red Christmas. So, check back closer to Christmas, and I’ll have posted my digital version of my Christmas Card here to share. Good luck with all your fun photo projects!

9 month milestones as documented by my big sister videographer

Lena's favorite thing to play with me is to take pictures and videos of me. So, here are some of the things I've been working on that she's caught on camera. Big sister, babysitter and photographer in one! My Mom's got it sooo easy!

Here's my 2 bottom teeth and my cute smile. Unfortunately, I'm not always smiling lately, because all 6 of my top front teeth are hurting and trying to come in. I love to hang out in the backpack with Mom. I get a great view of all the fun stuff she does, like playing in the sink with the dishes and water, snacking on chocolate chips from the freezer, pushing the noisy vacuum around and talking to my Aunts on the phone. There's a great built in alarm system too, with a fast response time- I just pull her hair!

Jacob got me this great toy from the grocery store the other day. As you can see, I've learned to growl, which gets a great response, too.

Since I got these great blocks for Christmas, Dad and I have this fun game we play, where he builds towers and I knock them down. Sometimes we see if he can build them while I'm destroying them.

Mom brought this big table out to my play area so I won't get into her project, but this has been a great toy, too. I did this a couple months ago at the Children's Museum while playing in one of their wheel barrows, but that was easier. This took more muscles. Lena and Nathan cheered me on while I practiced this a bunch this morning until I could stand forever and even let go a little bit. Just you wait, guys!

Adam was our main event this year! was born on April 14^th and is now 8 months old! We are very busy as learns to get around. Unlike his siblings, has loved being on his belly, even in the bathtub, where learned to crawl or “swim”. loves trying new foods and being at the table with everyone else. His siblings are a very excited fan club. They all love and enjoy interacting with him.

Lena (9) is a little mommy and early on showed she could take care of her littlest brother, changing diapers, putting down for a nap, and playing with him. continues to enjoy dance, soccer, and school. Nathan (8) is very sweet with . For Reflections this year he made of video of called, “Beauty is…My Baby Brother Adam.” did a good job and it is very sweet to watch. was also baptized this summer and loves to read his new scriptures. enjoys being a scout and playing soccer. Samuel (6) always wants to hold and read him his take home books from school. loves soccer and school and has discovered the freedom of reading and not having to ask others for help. , , and have been enjoying piano lessons this year. Jacob (5) is a great help at home with his only little brother while the others are at school. is a great friend to Mom and enjoys going to playgroup, preschool, computer class, and learning some piano with at home. claims has been saying “words” and has been keeping track, counting 20 so far. is happy and always has a smile for his siblings.

Elaine is enjoying the kids in all their varied stages and unique strengths. keeps busy with primary, playgroup, co-op preschool, PTA, running, projects and family. Weston finished his classes through Regis University and we look forward to taking the kids with us to his graduation next May in Colorado for ’s transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy (tDPT) degree and fellowship in Manual Therapy. continues to help with the REAL Salt Lake major league soccer team and is excited about them winning the MLS Cup for the first time. also enjoys hiking with , , ,,, & and working with the sports programs as the Stake Physical Activities Director.

After much drama, Adam finally didn't have a big scratch on his face and got his pics taken.

One reason I love this pic, is he is my baby that has loved his tummy the most.

He did this "amazed" look last time, too. I love how it shows his eyelashes and eyes that were blue last time and now are hazel going...?

While Dad's Away...

The last weekend in September, Weston went to Denver for his last weekend trip for his last class. Since getting to 4 Saturday soccer games at 2 different fields and coaching 1 is daunting enough, Friday night I sent the kids to bed dressed in their uniforms and ready to go. However, 'go to sleep' somehow translated 'cut cardboard with Mom's xacto knife' to Sam and he did this:

Thanks to my nurse friend who came over to lend some advice, she reminded me that our after-hours group at my pediatrician's office was open until 10pm and it was not quite 9:30pm. She stayed with my kids while I took Sam around the block to the clinic where they nicely cleaned it out and we videod it for Dad:
(supposedly not a word- but needs to be Frindled- you know we all say it)

Then they glued it (since numbing it would take around 6 injections). Can I get a couple of these for my 72 hour kits?

Well, one splint later (since it was right over the knuckle), we were home, the whole trip taking around 30 minutes. (Thank goodness this didn't happen after 10pm - the ER would have taken just a little longer). :)
Needless to say, there was one less soccer game to stick around for the next day and I was very glad to have the Physical Therapist back home by the end of the weekend!

Adam's Blessing

We blessed Adam on the 12th of July when I knew my parents would be in town and were lucky to have all my siblings there, too.
Since we've always blessed our babies around 2 to 4 weeks old, none of the boys ever fit Weston's blessing outfit. But, Adam was 3 months old for his blessing, so he wore his Daddy's cute little outfit.

So after he was sleeping like a baby, we laid him in his stroller on the Bethlehem blanket and took as many photos as possible. :) Thanks Julie, for some great pics to remember the day!

Ever since Adam was born, Jacob likes to have these really cute, in your face, conversations with him. One day, before Jacob was leaving to go to preschool around the corner, he came back in with his bike helmet on his head and said to Adam, "I'll be back soon, Buddy, don't forget I love you!"

This weekend, since Adam and I are still getting over head colds, we stayed home while Weston took the kids on our yearly trip to the Manti Pageant and campout with lake swimming and fun. After returning, Jacob was having one of his 'close chats' with Adam and I heard, "It's been so long since I was with you! I'm not going anywhere. I'll always be here." I'm not sure Adam was as reassured as his big brother intended!

Yesterday was the end of a rainy soccer season, and rescheduled games almost got rained out again. But we got lucky and everyone got to play their last games. I only coach one of the three teams, but the kids think these soccer ball cupcakes are so fun, I've started making enough for all the teams. Next year we'll have 4 teams!

The Sunday before Memorial Day, we met Mom and Dad and Glen and Ruth Israelsen at the Taylorsville Cemetery. The chrysanthemums were pretty and the company was great. I took pictures of all the Lehman line we have there and wanted to put them with the stories and connections I have learned and relearned. Let me know if any of you have something to add or subtract!

My Grandma & Grandpa Thalman are Robert Thalman and Mary Magdalena Lehman.

Some of the grave markers were tougher to read in the rain. This is Dad's older siblings, Ernest who died as a stillborn in 1931 and Donna Mae who was almost 3 when she died playing with matches and her dress caught on fire. Correct me if I'm wrong, that Grandma had a dream where she saw her babies that she would raise in the next life.

Sallie Lucinda Parker Lehman, Grandma Thalman's mother, born on 28 Nov 1877 in Mississippi and died 16 April 1960.

Grandma Thalman's father, Ernest Lehmann, married to Sallie Lucinda, born 15 Feb 1874 in Switzerland and died in Logan 10 Aug 1933. Coincidentally, his sister, Eliza Lehman, married August Kohler, Weston's Great Great Uncle. Yep, Weston's Great Great Uncle married my Great Great Aunt! Dad and Weston's Great Aunt Margaret discovered this at our wedding luncheon. :)

Sallie Lucinda Parker Lehman's parents: Lucinda Malinda Jackson Parker and Joseph Marion Parker. Joseph was born in Georgia on 7 Dec 1867 and Lucinda in Alabama on 28 April 1848.

These next four names have had the markers replaced in the last few years. Ernest Lehmann's father is Friedrich Lehmann (my Great Great Grandfather). Ernest's mother, Magdalena Jakob, gave birth to Eliza Matilda Lehmann (mentioned above) 2 weeks after immigrating to Midway from Switzerland and then died 10 days later. She is buried in Midway and I'd like to find her grave this summer. Anna Berger is Friedrich's second wife and Andrew Charlie Lehmann is their little boy.

Charlie Morris comes in on the Parker line. Joseph and Lucinda Parker lived in the South and sometime between 1868 and 1872 (lots of discrepancies Raeann helped me find), Joseph was approached by a black man to help him and his (caucasian) wife who was in labor. Charlie was born, but his mother died and the father handed Joseph the baby, asking him to raise him, because, being a mix, the baby would not be accepted among his people. (Sorry if some vocabulary is not ethnically acceptable, but these stories are at least second hand, and I'm trying to pass it on as I received it). The story goes that Lucinda was nursing her own baby at the time and was able to care for Charlie, but her baby was born in 1872, so I lean towards that year for his birth date. When the family came to Utah, Charlie remained in the South, but followed later. He was a seamster and there is a picture of him in front of a machine and lots of lace. (Dad or Raeann will hopefully scan that and send it out later.) Charlie died in a railroad incident of various details we'd love to confirm, on the 4th of July 1914 and the death certificate says he was buried on the 8th. If I can get a hold of the person who has the books for the cemetery, (I got his phone#), we will find out what we can about his death. Both Joseph and Lucinda, Sallie Lucinda, and even Grandma Thalman were alive when Charlie died, so it's strange that the dates aren't more concrete. In July, the Taylorsville cemetery will be turned over to the City of Taylorsville, I discovered. Maybe those books will become more publically accessible. Aunt Ruth mentioned there were supposedly more Parkers buried in the Taylorsville Cemetery, so I'd like to find out about that.

These two infants are Grandma Thalman's older brothers, Joseph Everett and Ernest Andrew. Joseph Everett was the little preemie baby who was so tiny you could hold him in the palm of your hand. To keep him warm enough, they set him on the door of the wood burning stove in a loaf pan (are those details accurate?). Despite surviving that rough start, he died at 2 years old, chasing his escaped pet canary out over the canal and drowned. Ernest Andrew died the same day he was born. Three years later, a brother, Ernest Andrew Lehman was born 20 Oct 1904 in Park City. He lived a long time and Dad says we used to visit him where he lived in Magna when we would visit the Jensens in West Valley.

Lucinda Lehman, or "Aunt Lu" was Grandma Thalman's older sister. She never married and taught school in Idaho (though her mother recorded her as a bookkeeper on her death certificate) and died of "milk leg". Dad said he was 10 or 11 when she died, and it was his first close relative he remembers dying.

Grandma Thalman's sister Aunt Edie (how did she spell Edie?) married Frank Mellen. Aunt Edie was lots of fun, from being the fastest crotcheter minus one finger-- to scaring kids who didn't know a thing about dentures, by sticking her tongue out at you UNDER her bottom row of teeth! And, yes, I drank her pear juice. When Grandma Thalman and her two sisters, Edith and Evelyn were widows, and traveled to California to visit us, they were a blast. Later, Shauna, Raeann and I referred to them as the Knitting Traveling Grandmas and made our plans to do the same some day, bringing along our knitting, crotchet, and embroidery. I still haven't learned to knit, so I'll take the crotchet!

Aunt Edie's son, Fred helped us tube down the Provo River last August when everyone was together for Raeann's graduation and I remember his wife Fonda. It was surprising to see this new head stone on Sunday, since we had not heard that she had passed away, just in December.

Charles W. Parker is Sallie Lucinda's brother and he and his wife are buried here.

Charles and Lucinda has a grand baby named Adeline. That makes this baby Adeline and my Dad exact 2nd cousins. Her parents were Maron Andrew Parker and Adeline Ross. Maron actually died in Oregon, but was buried in Bountiful. Sounds like a little homework for each of us, Raeann! Thanks to Raeann, we know how this little one fits in, because unfortunately, she was listed as Joseph Parker and Lucinda Jackson's child on Family Search, but she would have been born after her parents died, oops!

I enjoyed straightening this all out in preparation to post this. We usually visit the Provo Cemetery where we have family on both sides, but I realized it has been I long time since I had visited the Taylorsville Cemetery. SCIENCE FAIR FUN

Lena wanted to do a science fair project on fossils and we found a fun idea making fossils of a shell with plaster paris in different kinds of dirt. She does a great job of her interviews for science fair and feels very comfortable. She won first place again this year, this time in 3rd & 4th grades and went on to district.

Nathan loves science and plays with it daily. After doing an inventor report of Einstein earlier this school year, he became very interested in gravity and Newton, and acceleration. Matching those interests with his marble play, made for a great science fair project idea.

Nathan also has a new love for comics and has read every Calvin & Hobbes, Garfield, and Bone he can get his hands on, so we searched for a comic about gravity and Newton. After reading several that weren't what we wanted, Nathan said in disgust, "They're mocking Isaac Newton!" Gratefully, we finally found a perfect and 'respectful' one for his board.

Nathan got 2nd place for 2nd grade. Everyone who participated received a gold ribbon metal.

Last summer, Sam got a book from the library on how to make rubber band cars out of cardboard. He wanted to make one and test it out on different surfaces. So, he got to learn a bit about friction and have some fun along the way.

GRADUATION DAY!

Sam and Jake enjoyed going to computer class together this year. Sam loves school and was sad to see it end and even demanded "20 more days of computer class" from me one morning! Ms. Marj is such a fun teacher and made their "graduation" memorable. They love their new set of books they received at the end of the class.

Sam also got to go on Jake's last preschool field trip. The International Peace Gardens was fun on a beautiful spring day. The boys enjoyed this 'Stonehedge' to climb. Though fairly downtown, I think the gardens is one of the best kept secrets around, aside from Wheeler Farm!

5 YEARS of DANCE with AUNT KAYLA

Lena has taken dance at the same studio as her Aunt Kayla for the last 5 years with a Spring recital together at the end of each year. Kayla is graduating from high school this year and it was fun to remember the "family function" recitals each May.

This year, Lena, her cousin Avy and their Aunt Kayla were all in the same recital together!

Three of those five years have been with her friend Megan, who's moving next month! We're going to miss her and her family!

Last Tuesday was Adam's 2 week check up. He weighed 8lbs. 2oz. and 20in. and is doing great. Today he's 3 weeks old and so we went to capture that newborn look before it flies away with time.

One of my favorite things is his perfect "hair do". He has this great wave at his hairline. I also love the long lashes that I haven't been able to capture with my camera.

A few things happened today.

Adam Joseph Lindsay joined our family as the 5th child this morning.

He arrived at 5:25 am while we were in room 205.

He was 19.5 inches and 7.5625 pounds
(or 7 pounds 9 ounces for those of you who don't want to calculate it).

Elaine and Adam are doing well.

The Bright Side of Being Sick for 14 days...

After being sick for over a week, my cute kids come in one morning with my toast and orange juice on this plate that looks like a sun with their notes to me as the rays. It says "You are our SUNSHINE!" And "you are a million drops in my life." etc.
It's amazing after having four kids so close together, how independent they have become, especially with Lena as their little mommy, doing everything just like I would. Kind of crazy starting over with a newborn, but exciting all the same. The kids are so different this time. Jacob is older than Lena was when he was born!
Just hope I get over this soon. This has been worse than mono, but at least not as bad as dengue fever.

Larry H. Miller, long-time owner of the Utah Jazz and many other businesses, passed away Friday. There have been many tributes by radio, TV, and newspapers highlighting his highs and even some lows. Even though he was someone who did not thrive in school, his business prowess was rarely challenged. He was also very involved in philanthropic activities. In all reality, his passing has brought a lot of thoughts to mind.

What legacy do I want to leave? How do I want to be remembered?

My biggest wish is that I will be remembered as someone who tried to show love to all of God's children. In writing this I realize, I have a long way to go. I will start with my family and move outward from there.

Defining Characteristics

In a talk at church on Sunday, a question was posed that I would like to post for comments. The question was, "What was the defining characteristic of Joseph Smith?".

Some of the items that were brought up were perseverance, obedience, and charitable.

I thought faithful would have been a great fit. It was by faith that he saw the Heaven's open. It was by faith that brought him through the great trials. And it was by faith that miracles were wrought with his hands.

I would love to hear your comments about that question as well as pose another.

What's in a name?

I thought I'd start with the name. We called my grandparent's home "The House of 1001 Delights" and it held at least that many. So, I was quite honored when, after staying with us, my brother and sister-in-law christened our home, 'The Villa Lindsay.' My sister once said that we should live our lives to have something worth writing about. So, my two hopes for this are: first, that we're living such to have something worth sharing and second, that Villa Lindsay is an enjoyable place for friends and family to visit.
